Corporate and Personal Names

Corporate and personal name elements can be added at various locations within a finding aid, most notably within the Controlled Access Headings element (controlaccess), but also in indexes and name groups. This example centers upon their addition into controlaccess.

Once controlaccess has been added into the archdesc or component, click the green plus icon to the right of the heading. This will show a popup box with the available elements. Select Corporate Name or Personal Name. There are two ptions to choose from: VIAF or local controlled vocabulary. The latter option provides the user with a text box with autosuggest that connects to the vocabularies Solr index. The user may select a suggested term or type in a new term. The former option, VIAF, connects to the APIs, providing the user with an interface for searching for applicable terms.

Type a name into the text input and click “Search” to query the API. The first 100 results will be displayed in the list. Select one term to set the value of the persname or corpname element. Upon selecting the name, the @source attribute of the element will be set to “viaf” and the @authfilenumber attribute will be set to the unique identifier of the VIAF record. After the finding aid is saved, the public HTML record will display an icon next to the name which will link to the VIAF record.

By default, the Library of Congress label is displayed. In the future, EADitor will better support internationalization, enabling the capture of terms in alternate languages.
